オフィスの中にアート
このほどとても素敵な体験をさせていただきました。
すどう美術館の収蔵作品を受贈いただいたHamee社の樋口敦士会長さんから少し前に、本社オフィスの中に絵をたくさん掛けたいので協力いただきたいとの申し出でがありました。樋口さんは絵を展示することにより・社員が前向きになる・クリエイティブ且つ、明るい印象のオフィスとなる・コミュニケーションが促進されるとの考えで、その発想がすごいと感じ入りました。
そして、その総指揮をすどう美術館スタッフの髙橋玉恵さんが受けることになったのです。髙橋さんは寄贈した作品の作家や作品そのものをすべて熟知しており、作品の選び方、展示の仕方等も考えると一番の適任者です。
髙橋さんは、まずどういうコンセプトで展示をするかから検討を始めました。すどう美術館では小田原で3回「アーテイスト・イン・レジデンス」（略称ARIO）を主催し、国内外のアーティストを選び、12日ほど小田原に滞在いただき制作、そしてその後、作品の展示を行ってから寄贈を受けています。
Hamee社は小田原市にある会社ですので、この小田原で制作された作品を中心とする展示が、レジデンスを行なった意味も膨らみいいのではと考えられました。意見を求められましたが私も全く同感です。
並行して、オフィス全体を知悉しておく必要があることから、会社側の担当者となった執行役員の豊田佳生さんに案内をいただき、過日、社内全体を見せていただいたのです。
私も同行したのですが、3階建ての今まで見たことのない現代的でオシャレなオフィスで、1階は会議室等、主な執務室は2階、3階はスタジオ、作業スペースの他、明るい光が差し込む食堂があります。2階と3階の中央は吹き抜けになっており、それぞれの階に回廊もあって広く見渡せます。
社員の皆さんが働きやすい環境であることをいろいろな視点で考えられたものと感じられ、これも樋口さんだからこその発想だと思いました。
実際の社内展示は10月14日の土曜日の休日です。髙橋さんのほか、すどう美術館の作品整理を一緒にしてきた、信濃光則、木村由美子、朝比奈賢、菜穂子の皆さん、それに私も加わって行いました。１階の会議室の展示から始め、3階までの階段の壁面、2階の事務室内や廊下、トイレ内と進め、3階も食堂内の他、廊下、トイレなどで総数33点の作品を展示することができました。
事務室などは展示作品に照明も向けられ、それぞれの絵が輝き壮観です。
私はサラリーマン時代も長く、仕事上で多くの会社を見て来ていますが、これほど充実した作品の展示がされているところを見たことがありません。
もちろん、一番大事なのは社員の反応ですが、樋口さんや豊田さんからいただいたとりあえずのコメントでは、喜んでいる社員が出ていて、「空間が豊かになる気がする」、「自然に馴染んでいるので違和感がない」などポジティブな感想が寄せられているようで、ホッとしています。
美術作品に囲まれ、精神的な潤いを感じながら仕事ができ、これまで以上に能率が上がっていくことを期待し、「オフィスの中にアートを」とのモデル会社として広く知られるようになれば最高と私は思っているのです。

Art in the office
I recently had a very nice experience.
A while ago, Mr. Atsushi Higuchi, Chairman of Hamee, Inc., a recipient of artwork from Gallery SUDOH’s collection, asked for our cooperation in hanging many paintings in his office at the headquarters. Mr. Higuchi believes that by displaying the paintings, employees will feel more positive, the office will have a more creative and cheerful impression, and communication will be promoted.
The staff member of Gallery SUDOH, Ms. Tamae Takahashi, was chosen to take the overall direction of the project. Ms. Takahashi knows all the artists and the works themselves, and is the most qualified person for the job, considering the way the works were selected and displayed.
Ms. Takahashi began by considering what kind of concept she would use for the exhibition. Gallery SUDOH has hosted the “Artist in Residence” (ARIO) program three times in Odawara, selecting artists from Japan and abroad to stay in Odawara for 12 days to create their works, and then exhibiting them before receiving their donations.
Since Hamee is located in Odawara City, we thought it would be better to exhibit mainly works created in Odawara, which would expand the meaning of the residency. She asked for my opinion, and I completely agree with her.
In parallel, we needed to get acquainted with the entire office, so Mr. Yoshio Toyoda, the executive officer in charge of the company, gave us a tour and showed us around the entire company.
The first floor has conference rooms, etc., the main offices are on the second floor, and the third floor has studios, work spaces, and a brightly lit cafeteria. The second and third floors have a central atrium, and each floor has a corridor for a wide view.
I felt that this was also an idea that only Mr. Higuchi could have come up with, as he considered various perspectives to create a comfortable working environment for all employees.
The actual in-company display was set for Saturday, October 14, a day off. In addition to Ms. Takahashi, Mitsunori Shinano, Yumiko Kimura, Ken Asahina, and Nahoko, who had worked together to organize the works at Gallery SUDOH, and I joined them for the exhibit, which began on the first floor in the conference room and continued on the walls of the stairs to the third floor, in the offices, hallways, and restrooms on the second floor, and on the third floor in the cafeteria, hallways, restrooms, and elsewhere. We were able to display a total of 33 artworks.
In the office and other areas, the works on display are illuminated and each picture shines brightly, creating a spectacular sight.
I have been a businessman for a long time and have visited many companies in my work, but I have never seen such a full display of artwork.
Of course, the most important thing is the reaction of the employees, but I am relieved to see that, in the meantime, the comments we have received from Mr. Higuchi and Mr. Toyoda indicate that the employees are pleased and that they are giving positive feedback such as “I feel the space is enriched” and “It blends in naturally and does not feel strange.
Surrounded by works of art, people can work with a sense of spiritual enrichment, which I hope will lead to greater efficiency than ever before, and I think it would be great if we could become widely known as a model company for “art in the office.
