今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。
平塚市美術館に行く
5月2日（2023年）、平塚市美術館に行ってきました。「モノクロームの表現」と「細川護熙－美の世界」の二つの展覧会を見るためですが、他にもう一つ私の思惑があってです。
「モノクロームの表現」は文字通りモノクロの作品で、面識のある木下晋さん他3人の現存の画家、すでに鬼界に入られている田沢茂さん他3人の画家計8人の展覧会ですが、それぞれ、鉛筆、木炭や墨、コンテ、油絵具などを使った大作がたくさん並び圧巻でした。いずれも美術館収蔵の作品ということで、それを活用されていることでも感心させられました。
「細川護熙」展も総理を務めた後、60歳で政界を脱してから、家系の焼き物（陶芸）を始め、続いて書、水墨画、漆絵、油彩と幅を広げ、今回の展覧会ではなんと100点におよぶ作品の展示です。どれもが優れた芸術家の作品で見応えがありました。政治家で美術に関心を持つ人はほとんど皆無の中で、こんな方がいるのはとてもうれしいことだと思います。
さて、もう一つの目的ですが、私は菅創吉作品の大きな展覧会開催を夢見ており、美術館としての評価が高く、そして広い会場を持つこの美術館に白羽の矢を立てていたのです。お世話になっている学芸員の方にお会いでき、菅創吉展開催の可能性があるか打診のところ、関係資料等を提出すれば検討するとの回答がいただけました。
私が集めた作品、私の知っている方たちの作品借用だけでは足りません。
そのために考えていたのが富山の南砺市にある福野文化創造センターが所蔵する菅作品の借用です。ここには縁あって、菅創吉の未亡人が多数の作品を寄贈しており、数年前に「菅創吉生誕110周年記念展」開催の際はご依頼を受け、すどう美術館からも20数展の作品をお貸ししましたが、全体で110点の作品が展示されております。そのオープンの節は私もご招待をいただき、ごあいさつとテープカットをさせていただきました。
平塚市美術館にお伺いした翌日、早速、福野文化創造センターのよく知っている学芸員に電話、菅作品の借用の可能性についてお聞きしてみたのです。
そして、センターは現在南砺市の所管であり、平塚市所管の美術館であれば、市同士の関係となるので貸し出しは可能との回答をいただきました。
これからいろいろ山あり谷ありでたいへんは覚悟のうえですが、平塚での菅創吉展実現に向かい、邁進していきたいと思います。

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part40 “Visit Hiratsuka City Museum of Art”

Visit Hiratsuka City Museum of Art
On May 2 (2023), I visited the Hiratsuka Museum of Art. I went there to see two exhibitions, “Expressions in Monochrome” and “Morihiro Hosokawa: The World of Beauty,” but I also had another reason in mind.
The “Expression in Monochrome” exhibition was literally an exhibition of black-and-white works by a total of eight artists, including Susumu Kinoshita, whom I am acquainted with, three other existing painters, and Shigeru Tazawa, who has already entered the demon world. All of the works were from the museum’s collection, and we were impressed by the way in which they were used.
After leaving politics at the age of 60, he began to work in his family’s pottery, and later expanded to calligraphy, ink and wash painting, lacquer painting, and oil painting, and this exhibition featured over 100 works. All of them are works of outstanding artists and well worth seeing. It is very nice to see such a person in politics, whereas almost no one is interested in art.
Another purpose of my visit was to dream of holding a major exhibition of Sokichi Suga’s works, and I had my eye on this museum, which is highly regarded as an art museum and has a spacious venue. I met with the curator, who has been a great help to me, and asked if there was a possibility of holding an exhibition of Sokichi Suga’s works, to which he replied that he would consider it if I submitted relevant materials.
It is not enough for me to collect works and borrow works from people I know.
For this purpose, we were considering borrowing works by Suga from the collection of the Fukuno Cultural Creation Center in Nanto City, Toyama. Several years ago, when the “Sokichi Suga 110th Birthday Commemorative Exhibition” was held, Gallery SUDOH loaned more than 20 exhibits, and a total of 110 works were on display. I was also invited to the opening of the exhibition, where I had the honor of greeting the guests and cutting the ribbon.
The day after our visit to the Hiratsuka Museum of Art, we immediately called a well-informed curator at the Fukuno Cultural Creation Center to ask about the possibility of borrowing Suga’s work.
And we received a response that the center is currently under the jurisdiction of Nanto City, and that if the museum were under the jurisdiction of Hiratsuka City, it would be possible to rent it out because of the city-to-city relationship.
We are prepared for a lot of ups and downs, but I would like to push forward toward the realization of Sokichi Suga’s exhibition in Hiratsuka.
