アーティスト・イン・レジデンス
2007年に銀座から小田原（富水）に美術館を移し、少し小振りになりましたが、いろいろな展覧会を続けました。それとあわせて風光明媚な小田原で実現したいと考えていたのが「アーテイスト・イン・レジデンス」です。
欧米では国内外のアーティストを招待、滞在して作品を制作していただき、その後展覧会を行なうこのシンポジュウムが広く行われています。
様々な国のアーティストが同じ場所に滞在、制作しながら交流し、刺激しあい、お互いの文化に触れることで成長の機会となり、さらにワークショップや制作作品の展覧会で市民と交流することによって、芸術の発展につながることに意義を置いたイベントなのです。
すどう美術館では銀座時代からスペインのノハ市が主催する「レジデンス」とスロベニアの複数のワイナリーが合同運営する「レジデンス」から招待をいただき、毎年、関係のアーティストを派遣していました。そして私は日本でも本格的な「レジデンス」を行ないたいと強い思いを持ちました。
小田原に移転後、その構想を膨らませ、同じように熱い思いを持つ副館長の妻と海外のレジデンスに参加経験を持つスタッフの髙橋玉恵とで企画案を作成し、この3人で2010年、当時の加藤憲一市長を訪ね、協力をお願いしたのです。
一方で市内外12名の協力者に実行委員就任をお願いし「西湘地区アーティスト・イン・レジデンス（略称：ARIO）」実行委員会を設置、私が実行委員長となって準備を進めました。
海外のように宿泊、制作、展示のすべてができる施設はありませんので、まず、それらの場所を探すのから始まりました。同時にアーティスト滞在中の費用は主催者の負担ですので、お金集めに奔走です。企業や団体、個人の皆さまにお願いに歩き、多くの賛同をいただくことができました。小田原市が中心になって働きかけてくださり、宝くじからの助成もいただくことができました。
そして第１回目のARIOを2011年に無事開催、国内から6名、海外から6名の12名を招致してです。続いて2回目を2013年に、3回目を2015年に行うことができました。制作された作品はその都度、いろいろな形で展覧会を行ない、市民の皆さまに楽しんでいただくこともできました。
この3回での招待アーティストは国内17名、海外11か国16名、計33名にのぼります。参加者たちは小田原の風景、人情の厚さ等に触れ、喜びながら去っていき、今もいろいろな形でその時のことを思い起こしてくれています。
付け加えですが、3回目の時は神奈川県がこのイベントを評価し、協賛してくれましたのと、私の古巣、第一生命にお願いに行き、毎回100万円ずつ支援をいただいたことです。第一生命っていい会社でしょ。
なお続きがありまして、2018年には4回目の「ARIO」が箱根で行われているのです。高級ホテルで有名な星野リゾートから新たにできる仙石原の施設にあわせ、美術のことを行ないたいので協力をとの要請を受け、その新施設を拠点に、星野リゾートとすどう美術館および湘南アートベース（朝比奈賢 代表）が共催で開催したものです。
生の芸術に触れ、人と人とが交流する大切さを知らせてくれるこの「アーティスト・イン・レジデンス」をコロナが一段落した今こそ、また復活できればいいなあと今私は切実に思っています。

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part55 “Artist in Residence”

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudoh, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .
Artist in Residence
In 2007, I moved the gallery from Ginza to Odawara (Tomizu) and continued to hold various exhibitions, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. In addition, we wanted to realize an “artist-in-residence” program in the scenic Odawara area.
This symposium is widely held in Europe and the United States, where artists from Japan and abroad are invited to stay and create artworks, followed by an exhibition.
This event is meant to provide an opportunity for artists from various countries to stay and work in the same place, to interact and stimulate each other, to grow through exposure to each other’s culture, and to develop the arts by interacting with the public through workshops and exhibitions of their works.
Gallery SUDOH has received invitations from the “Residence” organized by the city of Noja, Spain, and the “Residence” jointly run by several wineries in Slovenia since its days in Ginza, and has dispatched artists to these residencies every year. I had a strong desire to conduct a full-fledged “residency” in Japan as well.
After moving to Odawara, I developed this idea, and together with my wife, the deputy director, and Tamae Takahashi, a staff member with experience participating in residencies overseas, we drafted a plan and in 2010, the three of us visited then Mayor Kenichi Kato and asked for his cooperation.
On the other hand, we asked 12 collaborators from inside and outside of the city to become members of the executive committee of the “Artist in Residence in the West Shonan Area (ARIO),” and I became the chairperson of the committee to make preparations.
Since there were no facilities that could accommodate all aspects of the program, including lodging, production, and exhibition, as is the case overseas, the first step was to find a place for the artists to stay. At the same time, the organizers would bear the costs of the artists’ stay, so we had to scramble to raise money. We walked around to companies, organizations, and individuals to ask for their support, and we were able to receive many endorsements. Odawara City played a central role in the effort, and we were also able to receive a subsidy from the Lottery.
The first ARIO was successfully held in 2011, inviting 12 participants, 6 from Japan and 6 from abroad. The second ARIO was held in 2013, and the third in 2015. Each time, the works created were exhibited in various ways and enjoyed by the public.
A total of 33 artists, 17 from Japan and 16 from 11 foreign countries, have been invited to participate in these three exhibitions. The participants left Odawara with a sense of joy at the scenery and the warmth of the people, and they still recall their visit in various ways.
I would like to add that for the third time, Kanagawa Prefecture recognized the event and sponsored it, and I went to my old employer, Dai-ichi Life Insurance, to ask for their support and received 1 million yen each time. Dai-ichi Life is a good company, isn’t it?
There is more to come, and the fourth “ARIO” is being held in Hakone in 2018. Hoshino Resort, a famous luxury hotel in Hakone, asked for our cooperation to hold an art event at their new facility in Sengokuhara, and we held the event jointly with Gallery SUDOH and Shonan Art Base (headed by Ken Asahina) at the new facility.
Now that Covit-19 has come to a close, I sincerely hope that the “Artist-in-Residence” program, which brings us in contact with live art and reminds us of the importance of people-to-people exchanges, can be resurrected.
