Prologue to “Correspondances” series
One autumn day, I visited a park that has long been a part of the city where I live. In the garden, which had been swept clean, I was able to find many acorns. I bent down and picked them up one by one, and found that they had fallen in various places in the spacious grounds as if they were a copy of the stars in the sky. Walking around the park, I found that there were large sawtooth oak trees dotted around the area, and the acorns had fallen from them to form constellations on the ground.
Later, while visiting the park many times, I noticed that the thickness of the trees in the park was almost the same as the large sawtooth oak trees on the private property next to the park.
When I perceived that a landscape I had seen as part of nature had been created by design, a desire to contemplate the history of this place began to grow in me. When I looked all around the forests adjacent to the public park, I found that many of the sawtooth oak trees were indeed the same thickness. Judging their age from the growth rings, I could assume that these were the survivors of many trees that had been planted sometime before the war, probably for use as firewood.
Each year, at least several thousand acorns fall from a single tree. Most of them decay, but the large trees dotted around here were born from the possibility of being able to superimpose as many acorns as there are stars, transcending time, and existing in the present. In the existence of the trees we can see here and now, we can see a miracle born through many years of hardship and effort.
Dotted around a space, there are forms that came to fruition and others that did not. That which connects, and that which does not. Phenomena like this can be seen as universal phenomena of life and fate that occur in every single place in the world.
Nature and humanity, the reason and sensitivity of humanity. I would like to believe that by overcoming barriers of language, within the cosmos, many individual characteristics empathize with each other, and form that world. The empathy I gained through the events of a certain day made me imagine a world of correspondences (“Correspondances”) that transcend space in mutual sympathy.

Masaaki Ohya is a Japanese artist who specializes in print making. He has held many solo exhibitions in Japan and Europe. He has taken part in international exhibitions and won the high praise of many art critics. He is currently working on new projects such as workshops, new print exhibitions and solo exhibition object works. He also teaches new intaglio techniques and is currently researching new ideas for his works.

1972 Born in Zama City, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan.
1998 Graduated from Gaduate School of Tama Art University, Tokyo. (M.F.A)
2002 – 2003 Taught by Mitsuo Kano on the Internship Program for Rising Artists run by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
2007 Visited San Paulo as a Group Study Exchange Program Member of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
2008 – 2009 Won a residency in Paris under the Japanese Government’s Overseas Study Program for Artists.
2016 Graduated from Doctoral Degree Course, Graduate School of Tama Art University (Ph.D)
