今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。
3回目の「NEW STORY」展
6月の21日（日）から28日（日）まで、3回目となる「NEW STORY」展を
いつもの秦野市のぎゃらりーぜんで開催しました。
この展覧会はすどう美術館と長い関りを持つ作家から選び開催するもので、
今回は石田勝也（神奈川山北）、下千映子（兵庫宝塚）、庄司光里（東京町田
）杉本裕子（兵庫西宮）、鷲見鋼一（岐阜）の5人に出展をお願いしました
。
いずれもすどう美術館の「若き画家たちからのメッセージ」の受賞者であっ
たり、小田原で行った「西湘地区アーティスト・イン・レジデンス」の招待作
家であったり、東日本大震災で大きな被害のあった岩手県大槌町に私が代表で
「東日本げんきアートプロジェクト」を結成、現地で行った展覧会などに参加
いただいたりの人たちです。
それぞれが個性あふれる作品を出展くださり、髙橋玉恵、信濃光則、朝比奈
賢 菜穂子夫妻の皆さんの協力を得て展示ができたのですが、私にとって素晴ら
しい展覧会になったと喜びました。
21日の初日には私の作家紹介に続き、出展作家に作品についての熱い思いを
語っていただきました。そして、そのあとはやはり長い付き合いのクラシック
ギタリスト橋爪晋平さんの演奏会を行いましたが、いずれも出席者の皆さんに
喜んでいただくことができました。
会期中は二つの台風に襲われるなど、天候不順が続きましたが、たくさんの
人が見に来てくださり、ありがたく、うれしかったです。
もう一つ、この展覧会で感激することがあったことを付け加えさせていただ
きます。
思いがけなく私の人生を変え、美術の道に入り込むきっかけになったのは菅
創吉の作品によってですが、作品に出合った直前に作家は亡くなっており、お
会いしておりません。それで菅創吉という人のことが知りたくて、関係者に訪
ねて回った時期があります。国民的俳優森繁久彌さんのお宅にも行きました。
父を追ってニューヨークに行き、コンピューターの仕事をしていた三男の慎
平さんのところにも、ちょうど30年前に行き、自由の女神の下でいろいろ話を
お聞きしています。その慎平さんが2年前に日本へ帰ってきており、少し前に
連絡を取り合えることができました。そして私に会いたいと言って、展覧会の
初日に会場に来てくださったのです。30年ぶりの再会です。私は思わず会場の
皆さんにご紹介してしまいました。
慎平さん80歳。これを機に新たなお付き合いが始まることでしょう。

The 3rd “NEW STORY” Exhibition
From Sunday, June 21 to Sunday, June 28, we hosted the third edition of the “NEW STORY” exhibition at our familiar venue, Gallery Zen in Hadano City.
This exhibition features selected artists who share a long-standing connection with the Gallery SUDOH. This time, we invited five artists to display their work: Ishida Katsuya (Yamakita, Kanagawa), Shimo Chieko (Takarazuka, Hyogo), Shoji Hikari (Machida, Tokyo), Sugimoto Yuko (Nishinomiya, Hyogo), and Sumi Koichi (Gifu).
Each of them has a meaningful history with us—some are past recipients of the Gallery SUDOH’s “Message from Young Painters” award, others were guest artists for the “Seisho District Artist-in-Residence” held in Odawara, or participated in art exhibitions held in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture—a region severely affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake—where I led the “Genki Art Power Project for East Japan .”
Each artist presented works brimming with individuality. Thanks to the support of Takahashi Tamae, Shinano Mitsunori, Asahina Ken & Goko Nahoko we were able to complete the installation smoothly. It became a wonderful, heartwarming exhibition for me.
On the opening day, June 21, following my introduction of the artists, each of them spoke passionately about their work. Afterwards, classic guitarist Hashizume Shimpei , another long-time friend of ours, gave a performance. Both the artist talks and the concert were warmly received by everyone in attendance.
Throughout the week, we faced unfavorable weather, including two typhoons, yet many visitors still came to see the exhibition. I am deeply grateful and happy for their support.
I would also like to add one more deeply moving moment that took place during this exhibition.
The person who unexpectedly changed my life and drew me into the world of art was the artist Suga Sokichi. However, he passed away right before I encountered his artwork, so I never had the chance to meet him in person. Eager to learn about the kind of person Suga Sokichi was, I spent time visiting people connected to him. I even visited the home of the national actor Morishige Hisaya.
Thirty years ago, I traveled to New York to meet Suga’s third son, Shinpei, who had followed his father there to work in the computer industry. We sat beneath the Statue of Liberty and talked at length. Shinpei returned to Japan two years ago, and we recently managed to get back in touch. Expressing his desire to see me, he came to the gallery on the opening day of the exhibition—our first reunion in 30 years. Overcome with joy, I couldn’t help but introduce him to everyone present.
Shinpei is now 80 years old. I believe this reunion marks the beginning of a new chapter in our friendship.
