Ms. Miyamachi’s works carry a gentle softness in their colors and a wonderfully soothing atmosphere. Her use of collage is also intriguing and deeply engaging.
She creates her art while balancing caregiving duties. Living with my elderly parents-in-law myself, I felt a deep resonance with her experience, and it was moving to see how making art shines like a beacon of light in her daily life.
With her permission, I’d like to share a part of what she told me after her solo exhibition:
“I’ve always loved bossa nova and jazz. About two or three years ago, when I was completely exhausted from caregiving while trying to create, I found myself constantly seeking out instrumental music in particular—as if acknowledging that there are things words simply can’t explain. I didn’t really want to paint what was right in front of me, either; I think I was looking to release my feelings and seek something unintentional and truly free.
I love the rhythm of music, and when I have the energy, Latin music makes me want to dance!
Looking ahead, I’ll eventually need to care for my own parents in Kyushu too. Thinking that this might be my only chance to focus on art, I took a leap of faith and decided to hold a solo show. My mental well-being might have been saved by painting. Rather than just depicting objects, it felt like I was having a dialogue with the canvas and being heard.
As I started joining various group exhibitions with smaller pieces in my spare time, my artwork naturally accumulated, which ultimately led to this solo exhibition. You really never know where life takes you.
I learned so much through this solo exhibition as well.”
