blog

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ]Part 3”How to see and enjoy pictures.”

This blog is for those who loved art classes when they were kids. (Of course, if you weren’t good at it…)

If you go to museums but have never been to a gallery.

For those of you who want to hang paintings and artworks in your home, but don’t know how to go about it.

Here are some tips on how to enjoy contemporary art at home.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudo, Director of Gallery SUDOH, we will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .

How to see and enjoy pictures.

To tell you the truth, I still don’t know how to look at pictures. Therefore, I can’t really critique them. However, I have been involved in the art world for more than 30 years now, so when I go to a gallery and am asked what I think of an artist’s work, it is difficult for me, but I do my best to tell them what I see. I try my best to tell them what I saw. Then I point to one of the works and say, “I like this one the best.

So is it painful to look at pictures? I don’t mean to say that learning or knowledge is completely unnecessary to look at pictures, but I do believe that pictures are something you can feel with your body. Most of the works I see and buy are so-called contemporary art, and they are rather abstract paintings, but I believe that everyone has the sensitivity to see abstract paintings.

Once upon a time, the late painter Masami Taguchi said, “Neckties and skirts are all abstract. Everyone chooses and buys them according to their own taste, and wears what suits them at the time, whether they are going to work or on a date. You don’t have to think too hard about painting, you can just enjoy it based on whether it fits your feeling or not.”

Don’t worry about what it looks like, just feel it with your own body. If you don’t feel it, move on to the next piece. Somewhere along the way, you’ll find a painting that matches your sensibilities, or a painting that you find difficult to understand will come easily to you.

Pictures are meant to be enjoyed and enriched, and there is nothing more ridiculous than suffering through them.

However, with an abstract painting, you can freely enter the painting according to your own way of seeing and feeling, in other words, 100 people will have 100 different ways of seeing and feeling.

I refer to this as “the picture swells.”

Important things I learned at the Gallery SUDOH

It is the connection between people. I have witnessed the connection through artworks, and through art activities as well, and it has become the driving force behind everything.

Each of us will make the most of what we can do, come up with ideas on how to improve the project and convey the message of the exhibition, and implement them. A flat relationship and trust in each other.

I realize that this is not the norm because I have been involved with and experienced many different people.

The director does not impose anything, and does not make everything manual. He has a mysterious charm that makes people nearby want to lend a hand. I am always amazed at his ability to raise issues and implement them.

The deputy director (his wife, Noriko) has an attitude of repeatedly taking on challenges, changing each time, and focusing on having fun for herself and others. Her overflowing ideas thrilled me every time.

It is now the root of my activities.

Thank you for reading to the end.
Have a good encounter with a work!
