今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。
イタリアの美術事情
前回の「館長のひとりごと」で、横浜のギャルリー パリで開催されていたイタリア ミラノ在住の松山修平個展に往訪したことをお伝えしました。その節お聞きしたイタリアの美術事情について少しご説明をしたいと思います。
イタリアの経済はもうずっと悪い状況が続いています。それが美術界にどう影響しているかという私の質問に松山さんは「どんな状況にあってもイタリアの人はみんな絵を買っていますよ」というのです。
展覧会を行なうと、すぐに自分が欲しい絵を見つけ、時には値段交渉を受けることもありますが、とにかく買ってくれるとのことです。人生を豊かに過ごすのにアートが必要ということを自然に身につけているのでしょう。
日本の現状ではではまだまだそこまで行っておりませんので、ちょっと歯がゆい感じがしてしまいます。
前にも松山さんからお聞きしたことがあるのですが、イタリア人はどんな環境でも夏には必ず長いバカンス取って楽しむとのことです。それは、そのために働いているという強い意識があるからなのだそうです。
思い出しましたが、かつてローマ在住の塩野七海さんのエッセイにこんなことが書いてありました。すなわち、日本では会った人へのあいさつで、よく「お忙しいですか」と声を掛けることが多いが、働き好きの日本人は幸いにしてという意味を込めて「おかげさまで」と答えますね。でもイタリア人だったら、「不幸にして」と答えます、といったことです。イタリア人の気質、国民性がよく表れていますね。
忙しければ忙しい中での幸せがあるのかもしれませんが、イタリア人のように、少し余裕をもって生きるということが必要ではないかと、あらためて自分のことを顧み、反省しているところです。
ところで「忙しい」の『忙』という字のことですが、リッシンベンは「心」の字を立てて偏にしたもので、心を失うという意味になります。つい私も「忙しいです」といってしまいますが、せめて「充実しています」に言い換えるよう、心掛けたいと思うのです。

杉本裕子展にて
前回は昨年の杉本裕子さんの展覧会のことを書きました。
今回は今年の個展についてお伝えします。
初日に作家の杉本さんが在廊していましたので、久しぶりにお会いすることができました。
近況や作品制作についてなど、お聞きしました。
今回は前回とまた違う感じの作品が多くみられ、特にフエルトを使った作品は初めて発表したそうです。
杉本さんの主催する絵画教室には、子どもから大人まで年齢の幅広い方がいらっしゃいます。
そこに通うお子さんに、その子が描い絵を杉本さんがフエルトで再現し、プレゼントすることがあるそうです。
そこから着想し、作品に展開。
今まで柔らかい作品は拝見したことがなかったので、新鮮な驚きでした。
作品は、板やパネル、キャンバスを切ったり、貼ったり、素のままで表現された作品が多いからだ。
小品でもダイナミックで、杉本さん特有の表現が見ていて爽快感がある。
今回も想像していなかった新しい作品に出会えて楽しかった。

The Art Situation in Italy
In the previous “Director’s monologue” I reported on my visit to the solo exhibition of Shuhei Matsuyama, a resident of Milan, Italy, held at Galerie Paris in Yokohama. I would like to explain a little about the art situation in Italy that I heard about at that time.
Italy’s economy has been in bad shape for a long time now. To my question about how this has affected the art world, Matsuyama said, “All Italians buy paintings, no matter what the situation is.
When we hold exhibitions, they quickly find the paintings they want and buy them anyway, even though they sometimes have to negotiate the price. I think they naturally learn that art is necessary to enrich their lives.
In the current situation in Japan, we are not there yet, which is a bit frustrating.
I have heard from Mr. Matsuyama before that Italians always take a long vacation in the summer to enjoy themselves, no matter what the environment. This is because they have a strong awareness that this is what they are working for.
I remember reading this in an essay by Nanami Shiono, a resident of Rome. In Japan, we often say “Are you busy?” in greeting people we meet. Japanese people who like to work hard would answer, “Thanks to you,” meaning “fortunately”. But if you were Italian, you would answer, “Unfortunately,” and so on. The Italian temperament and national character are well represented.
Perhaps there is happiness in being busy, but I am once again reflecting on myself and wondering if it is necessary to live with a bit of leeway, as the Italians do.
By the way, regarding the kanji for “busy” in “busy,” rissinben is the kanji for “heart” set up and polarized, which means to lose one’s mind.
I often say, “I am busy,” but I would like to try to at least rephrase it to “I am fulfilled.

About Yuko Sugimoto Exhibition

In this time, I would like to let you know about this year’s solo exhibition.

The artist,Yuko Sugimoto, was in the gallery on the first day, so I was able to see her for the first time in a long time.
I asked her about her recent situation and production of artworks.
This time, many of the works had a different feel from the previous show, especially those using felt, which were presented for the first time.
The painting classes organized by her include people of all ages, from children to adults.
Sometimes, she reproduces the children’s drawings in felt and gives them as gifts to the children who attend the classes.
From there, he took the idea and developed it into a work of art.
I had never seen soft works before, so it was a fresh surprise.
This is because many of the works are expressed by cutting and pasting boards, panels, and canvases in their bare form.
Even the small pieces are dynamic, and her unique expression is refreshing to see.
Again, I enjoyed seeing new works that I had not imagined.
