[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part53 “Episode with painter Yoshio Nakajima”
This is a blog that introduces contemporary art works that can be hung in your home.
I would like to share with you the joy of incorporating art into your daily life.
I hope that by looking at the artworks and artists, you will be able to encounter a special piece of art for yourself.
This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudoh, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .
Episode with painter Yoshio Nakajima
There is a Swedish-based painter named Yoshio Nakajima who has been very active in Japan and around the world.
His birth year is 1940, and he was born in Fukaya-cho (now a city), Saitama Prefecture. After studying at Musashino Art University and Meiji Gakuin University, he also studied at universities in Europe and was based in Sweden.
He participated in a famous art movement called Cobra, and was deeply involved with Asger Jorn, who was at the center of the movement.
It has been about 38 years since I first became acquainted with Mr. Nakajima. I think I was introduced to him by someone, and when I went to see his solo exhibition at a department store in Yokohama, I liked it so much that I bought a large piece of his artwork called ” The Arctic Sun”.
That was how I got to know not only him but also his wife and son, Andes, and we became close friends.
During the time of my home museum in Machida, He had a solo exhibition when he was back in Japan. In addition to exhibiting his works, he also held a workshop outside in the parking lot to draw pictures on large sheets of paper, which people on the street were happy to see.
After that, whenever He held a solo exhibition, he would not only invite visitors to view his paintings, but he would always involve them in workshops and performances.
I don’t know where he lived in Japan before that, but my wife found and introduced him to the house in Kawasaki, which is now his base in Japan, at his request, and he is still very happy with it.
He has had exhibitions in major museums in Sweden and other countries, but he has also lived in Japan for a number of years due to Corona, etc. He has held various events in addition to his solo exhibitions, and we have always been invited to them.
Recently, in December 2023, he celebrated his 83rd birthday at Studio D21 (Yotsuya, Tokyo), which is run by his supporters. About 20 people attended the party. He was as energetic as ever and gave a performance himself, which was amazing.
He stripped naked despite the cold weather and had a calligrapher write letters in black ink all over his naked body, and while he was doing so, he moved around while uttering what sounded like incantations. On the floor are scattered fragments of pictures drawn with ink paints that had been prepared in advance. Each piece is signed by Nakajima in horizontal characters, making it a work of art.
The event started at 11:00 a.m. and lasted until after 2:00 p.m., with a delicious lunch and drinks provided at lunchtime. On the way home, I received a painting of a fragment from he and displayed it on the wall of my house.
By the way, I would like to express my gratitude to his family for their kindness.
