美術館には行くけど、ギャラリーには行ったことがない方
家に絵画や作品を掛けてみたいけど、どうしたらいいか分からない方に向けて、
現代アートをお家で楽しむには、どうしたらいいかをご紹介していきます。
今回、すどう美術館の須藤一郎館長からご協力いただき「すどう美術館 館長のひとりごと」を掲載致します。
出前美術館
出前美術館のことについてもう少し書いておきたいと思います。
1997年に町田の自宅美術館で行っていた「―いのちのつぶやきが聞こえる―菅創吉展」がNHKの日曜美術館で取りあげられ、40分にわたり放映されたときの反響は想像を超え、全国からこの展覧会を見に人が押し寄せてきました。
このようにすぐ行動に移せる人もいるのですが、実際には感激をしてテレビを見てくださっても、見に来ることのできない大勢の人が背後にいるということに気づいたのです。
そして、美術は都市だけのものでなく、また一部の美術愛好者だけのものでもなくて、だれもが享受し豊かさを感じるべきものとの考えを強くしたのです。
そんなことから始めたのがこの出前美術館です。注文があればどこへでも菅作品を始めとするコレクションを担いで出かけて行き、見ていただくということで出前の言葉を使いました。
最初の注文は富山県の福野町という過疎化した町からで、店を閉じた商店も多く、美術を通して街を明るくしたいとの商工会の会長さんの意向を受けての出前です。空き店舗二つに50点ほどの作品を持って行き、菅創吉作品とその他の作品に分け2週間にわたり展示をしましたが、おかげでかなりの反響がありました。
その後、いろいろな方面からの要請を受けて石川県の金沢では数回、その他新潟県の柏崎、茨城県のつくば、東日本大震災後の岩手県大槌町など多くの地方に出かけました。前にお伝えしましたように近隣の小学校への出前も行ってきています。
地方へ行きますとその土地の人情に触れられますし、美しい風景やおいしい食べ物にも出会うこともできます。なお、展覧会中、私の美術についての考えをできるだけ伝えたいとの思いから、たとえば「豊かに生きる―美術との出会いー」
などのテーマで来場者にトークをさせていただいてきました。
抽象的な作品が多いので、中には「なんじゃこれは。さっぱりわからん」との声もありましたが、全体的にはどこでも喜んでいただけたと思っています。
さて現在、わが美術館は事情によりマンションであり、ずっと続けてきた館内の展示が無理になって、いろいろなアーティストの皆さんの展覧会もできておりません。それで頼まれて行う外部でのコレクション展が中心になっています。
したがって考えてみますと、今行うすどう美術館の活動はすべて「出前美術館」ということになるのですね。

小さなコレクター
出前美術館で小学校に展示した際、ある作品の前でじっと動かず見ている生徒さんがいました。帰宅後その生徒さんはお母さんに、その作品がどうしてもほしいと伝えたそうだ。
出前美術館で展示した作品は、美術館の収蔵作品である為お売りすることが出来ませんでした。しかし、その作品の作り手である利根川佳江さんの個展が、すどう美術館で開催されることを伝えました。
会期中、彼女は貯めたお年玉を持ってすどう美術館を訪れてくれました。そして、作品をじっくり鑑賞し、一番気に入った作品を購入されました。
作家の利根川さんともお会いし、お互いに感激した出会いになりました。
出前美術館をした後には、子供たちが手紙で感想を書いてくれたり、美術館を訪れてくれたりしてくれる。とても嬉しい事です。
しかし、作品を買いたいと自分でお金を貯めてきたお子さんは初めてでした。
その行動力と、作品が人を動かす力は年齢に関係なく届くことに感動した。作家も驚いていましたが、励みになると、とても喜んでいました。
利根川さんの作品は、すどう美術館でも人気です。実は、特に作家に人気が高いのです。小さなコレクター誕生には、彼女の作品を見る力が感じられた。
家に現代アートを掛けて楽しむという、心の豊かさを、自分の行動から実現する小学生に、大人たちが感動を頂きました。
子供の頃、自分の目を信じる事が出来ると、大人になってから物事の本質を自分の感覚で判断できる、強い材料になると思います。様々な情報や評価に惑わされず、自分がいいと思うことにチャレンジできる。そのような成長に、出前美術館の体験は繋がるのではないかと考えた出来事でした。

Here are some tips on how to enjoy contemporary art at home.

Delivery Gallery
I would like to write a little more about the delivery gallery.
In 1997, I held an exhibition at my home gallery in Machida called “I can hear the murmur of life – Sokichi Suga.” NHK’s Sunday Museum of Art aired a 40-minute report on the exhibition,at that time.The response was beyond imagination, and people came from all over Japan to see the exhibition.
Some people are able to take immediate action like this, but I realized that there are many people behind me who are so moved that they watch the TV, but cannot come to watch.
It also strengthened my belief that art is not just for cities and not just for a few art lovers, but should be enjoyed and enriched by everyone.
That is why we started the “Delivery Gallery”. I used the word “delivery” because I would carry my collection, including Suga’s works, wherever I was ordered to go and show them to people.
The first order came from the depopulated town of Fukuno in Toyama Prefecture, where many stores had closed down, and the chairman of the chamber of commerce and industry wanted to brighten up the town through art. We took about 50 pieces of art to two vacant stores and displayed them for two weeks, one by Sokichi Suga and the other by other artists.
Since then, we have been requested by various quarters to visit Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture several times, Kashiwazaki in Niigata Prefecture, Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, and Otsuchi Town in Iwate Prefecture after the Great East Japan Earthquake. As I mentioned before, I have also visited nearby elementary schools.
When you go to the countryside, you can experience the local people, beautiful scenery, and delicious food. During the exhibition, I gave talks to the visitors on topics such as “Living a life of contentment.: Encounters with Art” in order to convey my thoughts on art as much as possible.
Since many of the works are abstract, some people said, “What the hell is this? I have no idea what this is,” but overall, I think we were well received everywhere.
Now, due to circumstances, our gallery is an apartment building, and it has become impossible to hold exhibitions inside the gallery, which we have been doing for a long time, and we have not been able to hold exhibitions of various artists. Therefore, we are mainly holding exhibitions of our collection outside the gallery when we are asked to do so.
So, if I think about it, all of the current activities of the Gallery SUDOH are ‟Delivery Gallery” .

The Little Collector
When Gallery SUDOH exhibited at an elementary school as part of a “Delivery Gallery”, there was a student who stood motionless in front of one of an artwork and looked at it. After returning home, the student told her mother that she really wanted the piece.
The work exhibited at the delivery gallery could not be sold because it is part of the gallery’s collection. However, director told her that the creator of the work, Yoshie Tonegawa, would be holding a solo exhibition at here.
During the exhibition, she visited the Gallery SUDOH of Art with her saved up New Year’s money. She took the time to look at the works and bought the one she liked the most.
She met the artist, Ms. Tonegawa, and it was a mutually inspiring encounter.
After we do the delivery gallery, the children write to us with their impressions and visit the museum. It makes me very happy.
However, this was the first time that a child had saved up the money on her own to buy a piece of artwork.
I was impressed by her energy and the power of artworks to move people and reach them regardless of their age. The artist was surprised, but encouraged, and very happy.
Ms. Tonegawa’s works are very popular at the gallery SUDOH. In fact, they are especially popular with artists. The birth of a small collector gave me a sense of her ability to see her work.
The adults were moved by a girl who, through her own actions, realized the enrichment of the minds by hanging contemporary art at home.
If you can trust your own eyes when you are a child, it will be a strong material for you to judge the essence of things with your own senses when you become an adult. We can challenge what we think is good without being misled by various information and evaluations. This event made me think that the experience of delivery gallery may lead to such growth.
