今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。
若い画家の可能性
すどう美術館では町田の時から銀座を経て小田原の数年前まで、移転等で多少抜ける年がありましたが、20年近くほぼ毎年「若き画家たちからのメッセージ」展という公募展を開催してきました。
対象は30歳ぐらいまでとしたのです。アーティストには年齢は関係ないのですが、日本では欧米の国のように若いアーティストへの支援システムがほとんどありませんので、すどう美術館の壁面を提供し、少しでも支援ができればとの思いで始めたものです。
多少ユニークと言えば、応募者全員に私が面接をし、私から自分の美術についての考えを話し、応募者の美術に対する姿勢を質すことを中心とし、作品または作品の写真は見せてはいただきますが、参考資料の一つとしての取り扱いです。そして面接の結果、出展をお願いした人にはそれから展覧会に出す作品を2点まで制作してもらっていました。したがって、展覧会開催の時は全部初めて見る作品ということになります。
この展覧会では１～２名、多い時は３名の作品に「すどう美術館賞」を授賞し、その作品を買い上げ、その後授賞者には副賞として企画で個展を開催して差しあげておりました。
選ぶ基準は難しく、私の独断でしたが、うまくまとまっている作品ではなく、技術的には未熟であっても、しっかりした自分の考えを持ち、将来に期待が持てるかどうかに重点を置きました。
おかげで受賞作家の多くがその後も活動を続けており、すどう美術館との関わりもつながっているのがうれしいことです。
第一回目の授賞者は多摩美術大学を出て間もない利根川佳江さんでしたが、それから現在まで、長く質の高い作品を発表してきており、今はすどう美術館に展示のスペースがないのが残念ですが、最近も小田原鴨宮のギャラリーNEW新九郎で素晴らしい展覧会が終わったところです。
もっとも、賞を出すのがいいのかどうかはいつも悩んでいたところであり、受賞者ではないのですが、いい作品を作り、ずっとつき合いが継続している画家もたくさんいるのです。
本年3月に行われた亡妻紀子の追悼展に「若き画家たちからのメッセージ」展に参加いただいた多くの方が出展してくださり、この長くやってきた展覧会が結実したように思われました。
若い画家たちには将来に向けて限りない可能性を秘めている人がたくさんいるわけですので、これからもこういう人たちに何らかの形で支援が続けられればいいなと強く考えているところです。

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part21 “Potential of young painters”

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudoh, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .
Potential of young painters
For nearly 20 years, the Gallery SUDOH has held the “Messages from Young Artists” exhibition, an open call for entries, from Machida to Ginza and then to Odawara for several years, although there were a few years when the gallery was moved to a new location or something.
We decided to target artists up to about 30 years old. Although age is not an issue for artists, there is almost no support system for young artists in Japan as there is in Western countries, so we started this project in the hope that we could provide a little support by offering the walls of the Gallery SUDOH.
The main purpose is to interview all applicants, to discuss my thoughts on art and to learn about their attitude toward art, and to show them artwork or photographs of artwork, but only as reference material.
After the interviews, those who were asked to exhibit were then asked to produce up to two works to be shown in the exhibition. Thus, when the exhibition was held, all of the works were seen for the first time.
At this exhibition, the “Gallery SUDOH Prize” was awarded to one or two, sometimes three, winners, who were then given the opportunity to purchase their works and hold a solo exhibition at the gallery as a complimentary prize.
The criteria for selection were difficult, and were my own arbitrary decision, but I focused not on works that looked good, but on those that, even if technically incomplete, had solid ideas of their own and showed promise for the future.
Thanks to this, many of the award-winning artists have continued their activities and our relationship with them.
The first prize winner was Yoshie Tonegawa, who had just graduated from Tama Art University. Since then, she has been showing her high quality works for a long time and has recently just finished a wonderful exhibition at Gallery NEW Shinkuro in Kamomiya, Odawara, although it is regrettable that we do not have the space to exhibit her works now.
I have always wondered if it was a good idea to give out awards, and there are many painters who are not winners, but who have produced good work and have remained in contact with us over the years.
Many of the participants in the “Messages from Young Artists” exhibition exhibited at the memorial exhibition for my late wife Noriko in March of this year, and it seemed as if this long-running exhibition had come to fruition.
There are many young painters who have unlimited potential for the future, and I strongly hope that we can continue to support them in some way.

It is both the allure of the artwork and the allure of spending one’s daily life with the artwork hanging around you.
