加藤肇司さんのアトリエ訪問
このほど茨城県つくばに近い山の中で制作を続けている画家加藤肇司さんのアトリエに２人の若手画家、朝比奈賢さん、信濃光則さんと3人で伺ってきました。信濃さんの車に乗ってですが、小田原から4時間ほどかかりました。
加藤さんはすどう美術館が銀座に美術館をオープンした1998年からほとんど毎年、個展をしていただき、小田原に移りましても続けていただいた、深いつながりを持つ画家です。
すどう美術館での初めての個展ではとてもいい具象的な作品でしたが、その後は抽象的な作品に取り組み、毎年、新しい姿を見せてくださいました。
素材もいろいろ変わり、近年は新聞紙をコラージュしての作品が多かったのですが、これも類型的なかたちの継続ではなく、持ち前の追求姿勢を投影し、その都度変化を遂げ、質の高い作品に昇華してきています。
こうした加藤さんのアートに対する姿勢に朝比奈さんも信濃さんも加藤さんの信奉者で今回の訪問が実現したのです。
さて、加藤家ではアトリエへ向かう前に先ず、住まい2階のリビングに通されました。この壁面には抽象画に変わった最初の頃の作品を掛けてくれており、今につながる画歴についての説明をいただきました。そして昼食をご馳走になった後、別棟のアトリエに案内いただきました。
アトリエには加藤さんの最近の作品、新聞紙を素材としたもの、段ボールを使った小品などたくさん掛けてありましたが、あわせて好きで集められた他の画家の、個性のある作品もその中にバランスよく展示されていました。
ここで私たちは加藤さんからアートについての熱い気持ちを長時間お聞きすることができ、とても充実した時を過ごすことができたのです。
その話の中ですどう美術館と関わりができた少し前の時期、それまで付き合いのあった画商さんが、売れるようになった加藤さんの才能に目をつけ、いわゆる売り絵をどんどん描くよう勧められましたが、新しい世界を目指し、その画商さんと決別した時だったということもわかりました。
目先のことではなく、未来に向けて真摯に取り組む加藤さんの作品は次々変化を遂げながら、しかし、加藤さん作という戸籍がはっきりと残っているのが凄いことだと私は思うのです。
ところで銀座時代、すどう美術館では「アトリエ訪問」という企画を考え、希望者をお連れし、いろいろな画家のアトリエ訪問を16回ほど実施しました。福島県在住の安斉重雄さんのところにも行きましたし、もっと遠くスペイン・マドリッド在住の山口敏郎さんのアトリエにも足を延ばしています。
その1回目のアトリエ訪問が加藤さんのところで2002年に10人ほどで伺っています。ですから今回は2回目の「加藤アトリエ」訪問となるのですね。

加藤肇司さんの作品の魅力
加藤肇司さんの作品の第一印象では、静かで落ち着いた印象を持ちます。
表現に直接的なものを見せるのではなく、深層へと深く潜っていく感覚を覚えるような作品です。
ですが、そこから伝わってくるものはまた違い、作品自体が何かを伝えようとするような饒舌さも持ち合わせています。
しばらく見ていると、第一印象とは変わってくるのです。
作品に向き合う加藤さんの姿勢は、素材や技法、またそれらの変化を緻密に考える思考的な側面と、直感的な思い切りの良さがあります。
あります。と断言していますが、あくまで私の個人的な感想です。
嵐の様な葛藤と、穏やかな凪と、、、。
皆様にも作品の前に立った時、どの様に感じるか体験していただきたい作品です。

Visit to Mr. Keiji Kato’s studio
Recently, two young painters, Ken Asahina and Mitsunori Shinano, and I visited the studio of painter Keiji Kato, who has been working in the mountains near Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. It took us about four hours from Odawara, riding in Mr. Shinano’s car.
Mr. Kato is a painter with whom we have a deep connection, having held solo exhibitions almost every year since 1998, when the Gallery SUDOH opened in Ginza, and continued to do so even after moving to Odawara.
His first solo show at Gallery Sudo was very nice figurative work, but after that he worked on abstract works and showed us new works every year.
The materials have changed in various ways, and in recent years, many of the works have been collages of newspapers, but this is not a continuation of a typical form, but a projection of his own pursuit, changing each time and sublimating into a high quality work.
This attitude toward Mr. Kato’s art made this visit possible, as both Mr. Asahina and Mr. Shinano are admirers of Mr. Kato.
Before heading to the studio, we were first taken to the living room on the second floor of the house. On this wall hung a work from the early days of his career as an abstract painter, and he explained to us about the history of his paintings. After lunch, we were taken to the studio in a separate building.
In his studio, many of Mr. Kato’s recent works, such as newspaper and small works made of cardboard, were hung, and also his favorite works by other artists, which he has collected, were displayed in a well-balanced manner.
Here, we spent a very productive time listening to Mr. Kato’s passion for art for an extended period of time.
During the discussion, we learned that shortly before he became involved with Gallery SUDOH, an art dealer noticed Mr. Kato’s talent, which had become successful, and encouraged him to paint more and more pictures for sale, but he parted ways with the dealer to pursue a new world.
I think it is amazing that Mr. Kato’s works, which are not for the immediate future but for the future with sincerity, are changing one after another, yet they are still clearly identified as his creations.
By the way, during the Ginza period, Gallery SUDOH organized “Atelier Visits,” a program that took applicants to the studios of various painters on about 16 occasions.
We have also visited Shigeo Anzai, who lives in Fukushima Prefecture, as well as Toshiro Yamaguchi’s studio in Madrid, Spain, which is much further away.
The first visit was to Mr. Kato’s studio in 2002 with about 10 people. So this is your second visit to “Kato Studio”.

My first impression of Keiji Kato’s artwork is that it is quiet and serene.
It is a work that does not show directness in its expression, but rather gives the sensation of diving deep into the depths.
However, what is conveyed through it is different, and the work itself has an eloquence that seems to be trying to convey something.
After looking at it for a while, it changes from your first impression.
When Kato faces his work, there is both a thoughtful aspect to his precise consideration of materials and techniques and their variations, as well as an intuitive boldness.
