blog

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part 11 “Benefits of Diary”

This blog is for those who loved art classes when they were kids. (Of course, if you weren’t good at it…)

If you go to museums but have never been to a gallery.

For those of you who want to hang paintings and artworks in your home, but don’t know how to do about it.

Here are some tips on how to enjoy contemporary art at home.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudo, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] . This has become quite a series.

Benefits of Diary

There is a break in the middle, but I have been keeping a diary for several decades now. And I keep all of them with me.

Some people believe that we must leave the past behind and only move forward into the future, but I believe that there is a past and a present that will lead us to the future!

The first was in the winter of my senior year of high school, and I used a notebook to write in, not daily, but whenever I felt like it. There are 12 notebooks in this notebook, and they cover my time as a ronin, through my college years, my employment, my marriage, and up to the time when I was transferred to Osaka.

When I read them again, I found not only records, but also poems, a novel in progress, rakugo stories, and drafts of love letters written in my younger days. It may sound strange, but it seems that I had a great talent for writing.

This was the first step, but after that, things happened and I lost track of it for a while. One New Year’s Day, my wife bought a 5-year continuous diary for me and asked me to keep a diary. It is a diary that can be kept for 5 years, so each day has only 6 lines.

I thought I could write this much, so I resumed my diary. I am now in the fifth year of my ninth book, which means that it has been going on for almost 45 years. Incidentally, my wife herself did not leave any kind of diary until she passed away.

Now, during this time, there has not been a single day that I have not written. It makes me sick to have blank spaces. Therefore, on days when I am tired or have had too much to drink, I write the next day. When I go on a trip, I take a notepad with me or use the notepad at the hotel I go to, and I write it down and put it in my diary later.

Because of the small number of lines, I could not write endlessly about my thoughts and feelings, so I focused on the events of the day, where I went, who I met, what kind of work I did, and so on.

Still, it is often helpful to read back to that day when necessary and vividly recall any previous events. If I am ever involved in an incident, I can use it as an alibi.

But what happens at the end of this huge diary, which is difficult to dispose of by myself?

If it belonged to a scholar or a famous novelist, it could be used as a valuable resource, but it is completely useless to others, so I think it would be best to put it in a coffin when I die and have it burned along with my body, but it would be too heavy for me.

Artist is not for me.

Artist is not for me. Because I don’t want to have anything left after I am gone from this world. My goal in raising my children is that they can live without me! I tell them. I don’t want to be attached to my children, and I don’t want to be made to be attached to them.

I hope that each of you will keep your eyes on the direction you should be heading in your own field.

I would like to have as few necessities in life as possible. I don’t even create routines. However, reality is not so ideal.

On the other hand, I admire artists who are particular about something, and I am attracted to artists and their works who explore, think, and give shape to a single thing. I am also attracted to artists who are careful about preserving their work because they want to leave it for future generations, and who patiently pursue research on materials and techniques.

Each piece has its own background, its own struggles and joys of the artist. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get an explanation of what it is or if you don’t get exactly what it is.

If there is something that can be conveyed just by spending time together, it will be a unique work of art for you.

On top of that, I think that by taking an interest in the artist and learning about their way of thinking and the concept of their work, we can be more closely aligned with their work.

It is like a relationship of trust that you build with a work of art over time, and the room in which it resides will comfortably accept you and gently accompany you in your thoughts.

I spend time with the works I own that way.

Below the director’s essay, I have also included a few thoughts. I hope you will read it .

Thank you for reading to the end.
