後藤眞理子著「絵のある生活」
後藤眞理子さんは銀座で運営するギャラリーゴトウのオーナーです。
1998年2月に銀座6丁目にオープン。その3月にすどう美術館が町田から同じく6丁目に移設、近いので行き来がありました。
その後ゴトウは1丁目に移転、すどう美術館も小田原へ移ってしまいましたが、私は東京へ出てギャラリー回りをするときは、よくお寄りし、絵を見せていただいています。先ほどお伺いした時に、「お渡ししてなかったかしら」と言って、後藤さんからいただいたのがこの「絵のある生活」の本です。2023年の発行で―銀座ギャラリストの提言―という副題が付いています。
帰りまして早速、本を開けてみたのです。すごくいい著書でした。
生活の中に絵が必要という考えが基本になっていて、「アートは心のごはん」「絵のある暮らし」などとエッセイを書いている私の考えと一緒ですし、しかも文章がとてもやさしく、分かりやすく書かれているのも好感が持てます。
そして、文章ごとに関係する画家の大きな絵の写真がつけられていて、読む人の理解を助けてくれるのです。画家の紹介にもなっていますね。
それから後藤さんが自分のことをギャラリストといっているのもいいです。
画廊の経営者でよく、「画商」という言葉を使っている人がいますが、私はこの言い方が嫌いです。画廊は作品を売って経営を成り立たせないといけないことは、もちろんよくわかっていますが、「画商」は商うことが先に来ているようで嫌なのです。それにアートはいわゆる商品とは違うものと思っておりますし。
私はこんな考えで美術と向かい合って30数年、心豊かな気持を十分味わうことができました。もっとも逆にお金の面ではいつも泥沼の中でしたが…。
閑話休題。後藤さんが谷川俊太郎さんと組んで、詩と絵のコラボでの活動をしてきた話も素晴らしいですね。高校時代から谷川さんの詩が好きだった後藤さんが、ご本人の了承を得て2015年から「谷川俊太郎の世界を描く展」という企画で、谷川さんの詩のイメージで画家さんたちに絵を描いていただいたくことをしてきたと書かれています。講談社がその経緯や展覧会に注目、詩画集「絵の内と外 谷川俊太郎の世界を描く」が出版されていることも知りました。
後半、いろいろな方たちが、ゴトウに関り素敵な絵を買い、ご自宅に展示されている姿を後藤さんが取材、その様子が書かれ、また、最後には雑誌の取材を受けた後藤さんの軽井沢の別荘の絵の展示風景の記事もそのまま掲載されています。みんな立派なお宅に絵が掛けられていて、少し羨ましく拝見しました。

“Life with Pictures” by Mariko Goto
Mariko Goto is the owner of Gallery Goto, which she operates in Ginza.
It opened in Ginza 6-chome in February 1998. In March of that year, Gallery SUDOH moved from Machida to 6-chome as well, and since we were close, we came and went.
Since then, Gallery Goto has moved to 1-chome and Gallery SUDOH has moved to Odawara, but when I visit galleries in Tokyo, I often stop by to see her Gallery. When I visited it, she gave me a book titled “Life with Pictures,” subtitled “Ginza Gallerist’s Proposal,” which was released in 2023.
I opened the book as soon as I got home. It was a very good book.
The basic idea is that we need pictures in our daily lives, which is the same as my idea in writing essays such as “Art is a meal for the mind” and “Life with Pictures”, etc. Moreover, the writing is very gentle and easy to understand.
The book is a each sentence is accompanied by a large picture of the artist involved, which helps the reader’s understanding. It also serves as an introduction to the artist.
I also like that she refers to herself as a gallerist. I often hear gallery owners use the term “art dealer,” but I dislike this terminology. Of course, I am well aware that an art gallery must sell artworks to run its business, but I dislike the term “art dealer” because it seems to imply that business comes first. Besides, I believe that art is different from so-called commodities.
I have been dealing with art in this way for more than 30 years, and I have been able to fully enjoy the richness of the spirit. On the other hand, it was always difficult to make money.
Aside from that. It is wonderful story about how she has been working with Mr. Shuntaro Tanigawa to collaborate on poetry and painting. It says that she has loved Mr. Tanikawa’s poetry since her high school days, and with his approval, since 2015, she has been working on the “Drawing the World of Shuntaro Tanikawa” exhibition, in which she asked painters to draw pictures based on the images of Mr. Tanikawa’s poems. I also learned that Kodansha has paid attention to the process and the exhibition, and that a book of poems and drawings, “Inside and Outside the Picture: Drawing the World of Shuntaro Tanigawa,” has been published.
In the latter half of the book,she interviewed various people who bought wonderful paintings related to Gallery Goto and exhibited them in their homes, and the article about the exhibition of the paintings in her Karuizawa villa, which was interviewed by the magazine, is also included at the end of the book. I was a little envious to see the paintings hanging in their splendid homes.
