[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part66 “Two Regular Visitors”
This is a blog that introduces contemporary art works that can be hung in your home.
I would like to share with you the joy of incorporating art into your daily life.
I hope that by looking at the artworks and artists, you will be able to encounter a special piece of art for yourself.
This time, with the cooperation of Sudo Ichiro , Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .
Two Regular Visitors
Although the Sudo Museum is currently closed and our activities are mostly centered around outside projects, many people continue to lend a helping hand and visit me from time to time.
Among them are two special regulars whom I am always delighted to welcome: Mr. Kunio Ishida and Mr. Kunihiko Miyamoto. Both of them are now over 80 years old.
Mr. Ishida is a Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper delivery driver, and our friendship dates back to around 2007 when Sudo Museum moved from Ginza to Tomizu in Odawara. Shortly after we moved in, he came by on a sales call. However, upon stepping inside the museum, he set sales talk aside. To my surprise, he noticed my first book, The Story of the World’s Smallest Museum, and bought it on the spot, sharing that he loved art.
Having spent many years as a corporate employee, I had always read the Nikkei newspaper, but right then and there, I switched to the Yomiuri Shimbun.
At first, Mr. Ishida delivered both the morning and evening editions. Eventually, he shifted to evening deliveries only, and nowadays, his delivery route has moved to a different area. Nevertheless, beyond coming by every six months for the subscription renewal, he frequently drops by just to visit—usually after 5:00 PM, right after finishing his delivery route.
Each time he visits, he kindly brings bento meals for two, red bean buns, and tea, which is an incredible help to me as I live alone. Over our meal, we spend about two and a half hours chatting. Our conversations span a wide range of topics: interesting occurrences along his delivery route, stories about the people he meets, his deep affection for his hometown of Uwajima in Ehime Prefecture, and even current politics and world affairs. It is always a wonderful time.
My friendship with Mr. Miyamoto also goes back a long way. We first met through the “Kanagawa Western Region Museums Association,” hosted by the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History, to which we both belong. Our bond deepened as he kindly began offering me rides home after the meetings.
Mr. Miyamoto is a man of many talents. After serving as Assistant Director at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, he held key positions such as Advisor to the Keikei Hiraga Museum and Literary Editorial Advisor for the Shinsei Minpo newspaper. Today, he publishes the newsletter Hakone Art News. He is also actively involved in running the Kanagawa DEI Rotary Club.
Through Hakone Art News, he shares news and updates from various museums in Hakone, alongside a wide range of stories from beyond the area.
Regarding his connection with Sudo Museum, he makes a point of covering all of our exhibitions—including the “Odawara Moa Exhibition,” our special exhibitions at Gallery Zen in Hadano, and our permanent collection showcases—always writing heartwarming articles about us. Calling himself the “Photographer of Smiles,” he has a wonderful knack for capturing his subjects with bright, glowing smiles.
Mr. Miyamoto also visits my home whenever an occasion arises, bringing the latest issue of Hakone Art News so we can exchange news and ideas. Recently, he humbly remarks, “I’m starting to get a bit forgetful,” but far from it—his dedication and work ethic remain truly remarkable.
These days, I find myself fondly hoping that I can continue to cherish my long-standing friendship with both of them for many years to come.
