今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。
はじめ塾での講演
はじめ塾という寄宿生活塾が小田原市の城山というところにあります。
そして、その関連の市間寮と呼ぶ合宿所が丹沢山中にあり、ここでは春、夏、冬に子どもたちが合宿による生活体験を味わっています。
そんな塾があることを全く知りませんでしたが、本年(2024年)7月25日、この市間寮で私は講演を頼まれたのです。きっかけは関係の深いアーティストの朝比奈賢、菜穂子のご夫妻が昨年夏、縁を得てここでワークショップを行い喜ばれており、朝比奈さんからの推薦によるものです。
講演当日、朝比奈ご夫妻の車で見ていただく収集作品6点も積み、市間寮に向かいました。細い山道をかなり登って行き目的地に着きましたが、寮は古い大きな建物でした。隣接してもう一つ、こちらも古い建物があり、まずそこに通され、塾長の和田正宏さんからいろいろ話を伺いました。はじめ塾は祖父が始められたもので、和田さんは3代目だそうです。
いよいよ3時から講演会です。合宿中の小、中、高の30人ほどの塾生のほか、何人かの母親、そして何人かの元塾生が対象者です。部屋の中にはお持ちした絵も飾られました。
講演と言ってもメインは子どもたちですので、テーマは一応「私の美術についての考え方」としましたが、どんな話をすればいいのか、結構迷いました。
幸い、朝比奈さんの提言で、話の前に「すどう美術館10年史」という、すどう美術館の銀座時代を中心として作られたビデオの上映がされ、だいぶ予備知識を与えられましたので、朝比奈さんの司会のもと、あまり気にすることなく、美術についての私の体験を交え、ざっくばらんに話をすることができました。
それにしても子どもたちはすごいです。年代差はありますのに、どの層も皆理解を示してくれるのです。終わった後に質問の時間が設けられましたが、それぞれ的確な質問を受けました。展示した絵についても、うれしい感想をたくさんいただけました。
終了後、塾長さんのご配慮で、私へのお礼として、10数名が前に出てきて、ここで練習している有名な謡曲(題名が出てきません)を謡ってくれました。
調子に乗って私の方も、お返しといって、私の得意とする「かわいいかくれんぼ」の童謡を、身体を動かしながら3番まで歌ってしまいました(恥ずかしい)。
全部が終わってから夕食の招待を受け、しばらく待機の時間がありましたが、ここでも塾生やそのお母さんなどといろんな話ができうれしかったです。そしてそのあと、子どもたちが作ってくれた豪華なカレーライスの夕食がふるまわれ、周りに座った子どもたちと、また懇親を深めることもでき、感激でした。
自由で自主性が重んじられている、この塾のすばらしさが十分感じられ、私の勉強にもなる素晴らしい一日でした。

Lecture at Hajime Juku
There is a boarding school called “Hajime Juku” in Odawara City called Shiroyama.
The related Ichima Dormitory is located in the mountains of Tanzawa, where children experience life in a dormitory in the spring, summer, and winter.
I had no idea that such a school existed, but on July 25, 2024, I was asked to give a lecture at the Ichima dormitory. The reason for this was that Ken and Naoko, an artist couple with whom I have a close relationship, had conducted a workshop here last summer and were very pleased with it.
On the day of the lecture, I also took a load of six collected works to be viewed in their car and headed for the Ichima dormitory. We arrived at our destination after climbing a narrow mountain road and found the dormitory to be a large old building. Adjacent to the dormitory was another old building, and we were first taken to this one, where the president, Mr. Masahiro Wada, told us about the school. Hajime Juku was started by his grandfather, and he is the third generation.
Finally, the lecture started at 3:00 pm. The audience consisted of about 30 students from elementary, junior high, and high schools who were in the camp, as well as some mothers and some former students. The room was decorated with pictures that we brought with us.
Since the main focus of the lecture was on the children, I decided that the theme would be “My Views on Art,” but I was not quite sure what I should talk about.
Fortunately, at the suggestion of Ken, a video titled “10 Years of Gallery SUDOH,” which was made mainly during the time of Ginza, was shown before the talk, which gave me a good deal of background knowledge. I was able to talk about art in a casual manner, including my own experiences, without worrying too much.
The children, by the way, are amazing. Despite the age difference, they were all very understanding. After the lecture was over, we had time for questions, and each of them was answered with the right questions. I received a lot of happy feedback about the paintings on display as well.
After the event, as a thank you to me, the president of the school kindly invited a dozen or so people to come forward and sing a famous chant (the title is not given) that they have been practicing here.
I returned the favor by singing my specialty nursery rhyme, “Cute Hide and Seek,” up to the third verse while moving my body (embarrassing).
After all was over, I was invited to dinner and had to wait for a while, but even here I was happy to talk with the students and their mothers. Afterwards, I was served a sumptuous dinner of curry and rice prepared by the children, and I was thrilled to be able to get to know the children sitting around me again.
It was a wonderful day that allowed me to fully feel the wonderful atmosphere of the school, where freedom and independence are highly valued, and it was also a great learning experience for me.
