 今回は、すどう美術館 須藤一郎館長の「館長のひとりごと」を掲載します。

北陸への旅

 久し振りに遠出をしてきました。二泊三日、北陸への旅です。

 その昔、私は当時銀座の美術館で定例的に立川流の若手4人の落語会を開いていたのですが、その4人を連れ北陸に落語巡業の旅に行ったのです。仲介の方を通じ、奥能登の珠洲市にある「さか本旅館」から寒い冬場に宿泊者や近所の方たちに落語を聞かせて慰めてあげたいので、落語家を紹介してほしいとの依頼を受けてです。ついでに私のところでもぜひ、とその他の関係者たちからのお願いも受け、途中、金沢市のお寺、輪島市の公民館や小学校などで落語会をやり、最後が「さか本旅館」でした。もう23年前のことです。

 それがきっかけで立川志らら他2~3人で毎年、さか本旅館を中心に北陸巡業が続いており、しかも演ずる場所はずいぶん増えているようなのです。

 さて今や立川流真打として活躍している立川志らら師匠ご夫妻からこのたび、そのさか本旅館へ行こうとお誘いをいただいたのです。

 実は昨年12月、「巡業の最後にさか本旅館で落語会をするのでそれに合わせて来てほしい」と志ららさんからお誘いを受けたのですが、この時は「志ららさん、能登だからノーと言ってもいい」とお断りしてしまいました。能登空港ができていてそこから車で1時間ぐらいだというのですが、このところあまり遠出はしておりませんでしたし、飛行機という煩わしさも感じてしまったからです。

 しかし今回はご夫妻が新幹線で行く私を金沢で待ち受け、車でさか本旅館にお連れするという暖かいお誘いで、全くのプライベート旅行だったのです。

 もちろん今回は喜んでお受けし、3月4日(2023年)、勇躍、小田原を出て、東京経由、北陸新幹線で1時過ぎ金沢駅に着き、無事に志ららご夫妻に会え、奥能登に向かいました。旅館に着いたのは5時過ぎだったと思います。

 23年ぶりに旅館のご夫妻にお会いでき感激でした。その夜、旅館は休みでご夫妻が私たち3人を遅くまでもてなしてくださいました。小さかった娘さんが今は旅館を手伝っているのですが、当夜は所用で残念ながら不在でした。

 面白かったのは小田原名物の「菜の花」のお菓子をお土産としてお持ちしたのですが、この娘さんの名前がなんと「菜の花」さんと知ったことです。

 旅館のご主人はさばけた方で、私の落語小噺を聞いてくれたり、長時間私とダジャレ合戦をしてくれたりしました。志ららさんは我慢して聞いてくれていたと思いますが、「この冬ここで落語会をするとき、館長も必ずきて、ご主人とふたりで前座を務めろ」と命令されてしまいました。さあどうなることでしょう。

 さて、翌日はもう一つの目的、志ららご夫妻に金沢経由小松まで送っていただき、やはり23年のお付き合いが続く松苗佐紀子さんのお宅に伺ったのです。

 お昼過ぎに着いた私たち3人は松苗さんが前夜寝ずに作ったというたくさんの料理で歓待していただきました。

 夕方、志ららご夫妻は帰途に就いたのですが、私は予約いただいた市内のホテルに宿泊、翌日も松苗さんに近くの住吉神社や歌舞伎の勧進帳で有名な安宅の関を案内いただきました。安宅の関の海辺には関守の富樫と弁慶、義経の名場面の像がありましたが、それに加え青い空とどこまでも遠く見える海の青が何とも言えない素晴らしさでした。

 午後、JR小松の駅まで松苗さんにお送りいただき、長い車中でしたがこの三日間にお世話になった皆さんの暖かさを感慨深く思い出しながら、無事に帰宅することができたのです。すべて感謝です。

 それに少し長い一人旅に自信がついたのも大きな収穫でした。

Trip to Hokuriku

I have been away from home for the first time in a long time. It was a three-day, two-night trip to Hokuriku.

Back in the day, I used to hold regular rakugo performances at gallery in Ginza by four young members of the Tatekawa style, and I took the four of them on a rakugo tour of Hokuriku. Through an intermediary, I received a request from Sakamoto Ryokan in Suzu City, Okunoto, to introduce rakugo storytellers to their guests and neighbors to comfort them during the cold winter months. I also received requests from other people involved in the event, and along the way, I gave rakugo performances at a temple in Kanazawa City, a community center and elementary school in Wajima City, and finally at Sakamoto Ryokan. That was 23 years ago.

Since then, Master Shirara Tatekawa and two or three others have continued to tour the Hokuriku region, mainly performing at Sakamoto ryokan.

Ryokan, every year, and the number of places where they perform seems to have increased considerably.

Now, Master Shirara Tatekawa and his wife, who is now active as a professional rakugo performer in the Tatekawa style, have invited me to visit the Sakamoto ryokan.

Actually, last December, he invited me to come to Sakamoto Ryokan for a rakugo performance at the end of his tour, but I declined at the time, saying “Shirara-san, it’s Noto, so you can say no.” I was told that Noto Airport had been built and that it was only an hour’s drive from there, but I had not traveled far recently, and I felt that flying would be too much of a hassle.

This time, however, the couple had warmly invited me to wait for them in Kanazawa and take them to Sakamoto ryokan by car.

Of course, I gladly accepted this time, and on March 4 (2023), I left Odawara , arrived at Kanazawa Station a little after 1:00 pm on the Hokuriku Shinkansen via Tokyo, met Shirara and hid wife , and headed for Okunoto. I think it was after 5:00 p.m. when we arrived at the ryokan.

I was thrilled to meet the innkeeper and his wife for the first time in 23 years. The ryokan was closed that night, so they entertained us three until late. Their small daughter is now helping out at the ryokan, but unfortunately she was away on business that night.

What was interesting was that we brought them sweets of Odawara’s specialty “nanohana” (rape blossoms) as a souvenir, and we learned that their daughter’s name was “Nanohana” (rape blossoms).

The owner of the inn was a smart man who listened to my rakugo storytelling and enjoyed a long pun-fight with me. I think Shirara-san was patiently listening to me, but he ordered me, “When you hold a rakugo performance here this winter, you must come, too, and you and the proprietor will be the front-runners. What will happen now?

The next day, he and his wife drove us to Komatsu via Kanazawa to visit Sakiko Matsunae, who we have known for 23 years.

We arrived a little after noon and were greeted with a feast of food that Matsunae-san had prepared without sleeping the night before.

The next day, Matsunae-san showed me around the nearby Sumiyoshi Shrine and Ataka-no-Seki, famous for the Kabuki play “Kanjincho. At the seaside of Ataka-no-Seki, there were statues of the famous scene of Togashi, Benkei, and Yoshitsune, the barrier guard, and the blue sky and the blue ocean in the distance were indescribably wonderful.

In the afternoon, Matsunae-san drove us to the JR Komatsu station, and although it was a long car ride, we were able to return home safely, remembering with deep emotion the warmth of everyone who had helped us during these three days. I am grateful for everything.

It was also a great harvest that I gained confidence in my ability to travel alone for a little longer.
