[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part31 “Ashigara Art Forest Activities”

This is a blog that introduces contemporary art works that can be hung in your home.
I would like to share with you the joy of incorporating art into your daily life.

I hope that by looking at the artworks and artists, you will be able to encounter a special piece of art for yourself.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudoh, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .

Ashigara Art Forest Activities

There is a group called “Ashigara Art Forest” that operates with a secretariat in Minami-Ashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The representative is Yuichi Nakano, a former junior high school teacher.

The purpose of this major art activity, which has been going on for 12 years, is to ” Liven up the community with art! “

The main focus is the implementation of an exhibition to be called “The World is One Art Exhibition”. It used to be an abandoned junior high school in Minami-Ashigara City. Since last year, it has become a prefectural “Ashigara Furenai Forest” , and is operated together with the “Forest Earth Festival” that has been held here. It is located in the mountains near the famous Daiyuzandouryouson.

Gallery SUDOH has been asked to support this activity from early on, but we have not been able to provide any substantive assistance, only nominal support. However, I try to visit the exhibition every year, and this year (2022) I visited the exhibition on November 19 (Sat.) and 20 (Sun.), which was a short two-day period.

What is amazing about this exhibition is that the number of exhibits has been increasing every year, as it reaches out to individuals and schools from nursery schools and kindergartens to junior high schools, as well as to families. The works were displayed in two separate facilities on the grounds. According to Mr. Nakano, who was on hand to answer our questions, 1,350 works were exhibited this year, an increase of 40 works over the past year from the previous year’s 1,310 works.

The works included a grand prize, gold, silver, and honorable mentions. All of the works were very honest and very favorable.

In addition, workshops and music concerts were held in conjunction with the “Forest Earth Festival,” and restaurants and stores were also open.
I was surprised by the large number of people, many of them families, who came in greater numbers than I had imagined.

Since there is no space for parking and it is inconvenient, this year the event will be held with a shuttle bus running free of charge to take visitors to and from the Fujifilm Grand near Fujifilm Station, one stop before the end of the Daiozan Line.

Many volunteers are taking care of the venue as well as these grounds, and we are impressed by the strength of their teamwork.

It is a very difficult event for everyone involved in the preparation, care during the event, and cleanup, but I sincerely hope that this activity will continue for a long time to come.
