blog

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part16 “A society that spreads horizontally.”

I suggest that by getting to know the artists and artworks, you will feel familiar with contemporary art and find your favorite works.

I hope to convey to you the pleasure of decorating your home with contemporary art and incorporating art into your daily life.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudo, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .

A society that spreads horizontally.

In my 38-plus years in the corporate world, I experienced a vertical society centered on the organization, but my life in the fine arts was a horizontal society, and I was able to gain a wider range of experiences.

First of all, we have a relationship with the people who come to see our exhibitions. The general public, people of high social standing, and children are all treated side by side, and there is no hierarchy among the exhibiting artists.

Then, realizing that the number of art lovers would not increase if the museum just sat there and exhibited, we decided to hold regular concerts in the gallery during our time in Ginza.

Two groups were requested: one by Mr. O, former concertmaster of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, who is now an acquaintance of mine, and his related violin and viola players, and the other by Ms. Y, a violinist I have known since I was a child in the neighborhood and now an active NHK Symphony Orchestra member, and her colleagues.

I also organized a theater at the request of an acquaintance. I had to successfully set up something that looked like a stage, even though there was no such thing as a stage.

Then there was something a little different, which also started out as a request, but it was a regular Rakugo performance. Four members of the Tatekawa Danshi troupe performed every three months.

All of these are important for human beings, and I hope they will have a synergistic effect with art, but I think they have been quite effective.

In addition to the art world, it was a great opportunity to learn about the worlds of music, theater, and Rakugo.

Although the artist is a one-person operation, I also learned that the symphony orchestra members do not have a launch party after the performance, and everyone goes home without hesitation.

Rakugo storytellers served their masters, and perhaps they were naturally taught about the importance of human kindness and duty.

I often received mid-year and year-end gifts from them. The four of them always came together to deliver it.

Dan Dai, who was a direct disciple of Danshi, passed away at a young age, but three of his disciples, Harunosuke, a disciple of Shinosuke ,Shiraku’s disciple Shirara, and Danko’s disciple Kikko have all become active as professional performers.

In particular, I have maintained a close relationship with Shirara-san and his beloved wife, and perhaps due to his personality, he always calls me later when we go to hear Rakugo or have a drink together, and he is always concerned about my health and thanks me for my help.

Now, A horizontally society has expanded further, and through participation in overseas art fairs and “artist-in-residence” programs that include overseas artists, we have developed relationships with overseas artists and galleries, and, to put it another way, our circle has expanded to the world.

I feel truly blessed to have stepped into the horizontal society and learned many things that I could not have known only in the vertical society.

Experiencing Rakugo and music in artworks may have a different atmosphere from listening to Rakugo and music in a venue with no surroundings.

When it comes to creative readings, they read original stories inspired by the works.

I was drawn in by this interesting attempt to expand the scope of art.
