[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part32 “The Brightest Day of My Life”

This is a blog that introduces contemporary art works that can be hung in your home.
I would like to share with you the joy of incorporating art into your daily life.

I hope that by looking at the artworks and artists, you will be able to encounter a special piece of art for yourself.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudoh, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .

The Brightest Day of My Life

I am fortunate to have several “Bright Days of My Life,” and I would like to note one major one.

In February 2006, my wife asked Motoko Katsuta, a ceramic artist and excellent tour conductor with whom we have a close friendship, to organize a trip to Butavest, Hungary. The trip was immediately attended by 12 people, including my wife and I. We were all very excited to be able to visit there.

Butterbest is a town with a relaxed atmosphere with many old buildings that are remnants of the Middle Ages, and the Danube, which is supposed to be “beautiful and blue,” was muddy but flowed slowly in the center of the town and was very atmospheric.

During our stay in Hungary, we enjoyed a night cruise on the Danube River, visits to high-quality museums and galleries, and visits to two art universities, where we had the unique opportunity to listen to enthusiastic explanations by professors about the management of the universities and to see classes in action.

The highlight of the trip was when Shandor, who was Katsuta’s mentor, invited us all to his house for a welcome party.

He is a well-known sculptor who works mainly with stone. His house was located in a large old “artist’s house” with a long history, provided by the government, where only those who are recognized as “artists” are allowed to live. It is in the mountainside with embassies of other countries around. We were told that more than a dozen other artists have their own studios in this “artist’s house”.

The spacious hall was decorated with his wonderful works of art and various collected pieces, and we were treated to the greatest hospitality, including good wine and his wife Clara’s thoughtful cooking.

As the party was winding down, he suddenly gathered everyone together, dimmed the lights, and said, “We are going to have a birthday party for Ichiro Sudoh’s 70th birthday. Let me show you a Hungarian-style birthday party,” , and with that as a cue, a birthday cake was brought out along with what looked like fireworks.

After the toast, he presented me with a bouquet of flowers and a wonderful gift. It was a drawing of 70 cubes that he had spent the day drawing for me. What a thoughtful gesture.

I also received congratulatory gifts from everyone accompanying me, and apparently I was the only one who did not know. I was just thrilled by this unexpected event in a faraway foreign country.

My most treasured piece of drawing is now hanging on a wall in my house for a long time.
