blog

[ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] Part13 “Contemporary Art Theory.”

This blog is for those who loved art classes when they were kids. (Of course, if you weren’t good at it…)

If you go to museums but have never been to a gallery.

For those of you who want to hang paintings and artworks in your home, but don’t know how to do about it.

Here are some tips on how to enjoy contemporary art at home.

This time, with the cooperation of Ichiro Sudo, Director of Gallery SUDOH, I will be posting [ Gallery SUDOH director’s monologue ] .

Contemporary Art Theory.

The collection of the Gallery SUDOH and the exhibitions we have visited are all contemporary art.

The first Sokichi Suga work I encountered seemed to me to be semi-figurative paintings, but the gallery that handled them was a contemporary art gallery, and Suga’s works were also handled in that way. The gallery that handled them was a contemporary art gallery, and Suga’s works were also treated as such.

I was asked to give a talk on “contemporary art,” so I tried to learn a little more about what “contemporary art” is, including a little historical background. I looked in several bookstores in the area, but I found almost no books on art, let alone contemporary art, and I felt sad that so few people are still interested in art. Even though I myself have never read any art books…

So I came up with a way to look it up online from my computer. This has revealed many new things to me. I will include them in the discussion.

Contemporary art is defined as art created after World War II, from 1950 to the 21st century. Contemporary art is characterized by diversity and a strong message.

The founder of modern art was the French artist Marcel Duchamp, whose controversial work “Fountain,” a porcelain male urinal turned on its side and signed with a pseudonym, was exhibited in 1917. In short, it raised the issue of moving from the conventional “visual” (to see and enjoy) to “thinking” (to think and enjoy).

I have always told people, “I think landscapes and still-life paintings are great even if they are excellent, but that’s the end of the story. However, with abstract works (contemporary art), you have to use your mind and interact with the work from your own perspective, and the artist and you, the viewer, create the work together.

Then you have Kandensky, Pollock, Picasso, and others (modern art), and so on and so forth, leading to contemporary art.

In Japan, however, it was difficult to gain understanding, and it was not until the works of Genichiro Inokuma, Shosuke Osawa, Tatsuoki Nanbata, Jiro Oyamada, and others in the collection of the Gallery SUDOH that the flower of contemporary art blossomed. Today, Basquiat, Banksy, and others dominate the scene, and names such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and Yoshitomo Nara are mentioned as representatives of contemporary art, but regardless of their original concepts, I am concerned that they are being used for commercial purposes.

To conclude, I personally believe that it is important to hang works of art that you like in your living space and enjoy them, without being bound by any definitions of contemporary art.

Contemporary Art Recommendation YouTube

Painter Yuko Kawada’s YouTube “GAKA Radio by Painter Yuko Kawada” offers a detailed explanation of art under the title “Art Hyakka.

I just posted it on the DE art blog for your info, so check it out!

The content is interesting because of Ms. Kawada’s viewpoint, which is interesting even to me who has little interest in art history and has not actively studied it.

The exhibition proceeds in the form of explanations of prints, sculpture, impressionism, etc., for a person named Mr. Sugino.

Recommended for those who are not familiar with art, but who like philosophy and history.

Personally, I like the “mandala” installment. The times that delve into blue in several installments are also interesting.

As the director says, there are few books and information about contemporary art. You need to go and gather information yourself.

However, there is also an interesting aspect hidden there that cannot be experienced in art textbooks. Why don’t you try to exclude the world of art?

Enjoy contemporary artworks in your home or office!
