10回にわたり、須藤館長の文章を掲載させていただきました。この場をお借りして、お礼申し上げます。
亡妻紀子の追悼展
1月27日は早くも亡妻紀子の3回忌になります。
それを機に、ずっとすどう美術館のスタッフとして支えてくれてきた髙橋玉恵さんが発起人になり、その他関係者の協力を得て、紀子の追悼展を企画してくれています。展示の場所は神奈川県山北町の丹沢湖のほとりにある旅館の落合館と手打ちそばの太平楽で、この二つを運営する石田勝也さんご夫妻のご厚意で場所の提供を受けてということです。
石田さんご夫妻はともに美術の大学を出て画家としての活動も続けながら、家業を継いでいるのですが、ご主人の石田さんはすどう美術館主催の「若き画家たちからのメッセージ」展に応募、出展され受賞、その後すどう美術館で個展をしていただいた他、国内外のアーティストを選び招待して行う、2013年の「アーティスト・イン・レジデンス」小田原に参加をお願いするなど深いかかわりを持たせていただいています。
さて、髙橋さんがすどう美術館でお世話になったアーティストの皆さんに追悼展に参加のお願いをしましたところ、なんと70人に及ぶ方々が参加をしてくださることになったのです。海外からの参加も含まれています。
紀子が生前、一生懸命お世話をしていたことをこんなに多くの方が忘れずにいてくれていることに、生きている私はうれしく、感動でいっぱいです。
会期は会場の都合で命日より少しずれ、今年の3月５日（土）から20日（日）までです。
今詳細が詰められていてやがて案内のDMもできると思いますが、美しい自然豊かな場所でもあり、ご参加いただけるアーティストの皆さんをはじめ多くの方々にお出かけいただければと思っています。旅館がついているわけですから、宿泊も可能です。
会期中、ぜひ私もあの世から紀子を呼んできて一緒にお伺いし、展示作品を見せていただくとともに、その場にいらっしゃる方々から紀子の思い出や近況のご報告などお聞きできればと楽しみにしています。
それに備えて私はできるだけ体調を整え、一緒に追悼されてしまうことになどならないよう元気でいたいと思い頑張っているこのごろです。

縁に導かれて
不思議な縁で、人と人との出会いがある。そこには、自分の意志と行動が伴い成り立っている。自分から行動を起こさなければ、繋がらなかったであろう数々の大事な縁が、今、目の前にある。
私とすどう美術館との縁は、堀口岱子さんと、副館長である須藤紀子さんが大学生の頃からの友人という縁から繋がっています。堀口先生との出会いは、スペースUというギャラリーに、私が通っていたことから始まりました。
当時、高校生だった私は、ただ絵をを描くことや見る事が好きで、美術に携わるお仕事が何か出来たらいいな、と考えていました。しかし、絵が上手なわけではなく、美大に行くお金もなく、22歳まで続く大学にも、あまり興味がありませんでした。早く働きたかったのです。
スペースUはそんな時期に、偶然私の家の近所に出来たギャラリーでした。
かなり前衛的な展示が多く、ご近所の方はここはなんだろう？とあまり近づかない雰囲気でしたが、私は気になって気になって仕方がありませんでした。前を通るたびに立ち止まり、中を覗き込んでいたものです。
意を決して扉を開けると、オーナーの和田文江さんが美味しいコーヒーで迎えてくれたのです。現代美術に馴染みのない私でも温かい雰囲気の中、安心して作品を鑑賞できる唯一の場所でした。
そこで、デッサン会をやることになり、一緒に参加させていただきました。その時講師をしてくれたのが堀口先生でした。
今、副館長の追悼展のための制作をしています。私は作品を作ることからしばらく離れていましたので、改めて、制作をする喜びを感じています。副館長を思い出し、励まされながら進めています。
参加される作家さんの作品を見るのが楽しみです。このワクワクこそ、副館長と一緒に何かやる醍醐味ですよね！

すどう美術館の須藤紀子副館長は、2020年1月、静かに旅立ちました。
美術をこよなく愛し、常に新しい可能性を追い求めた副館長のために、作家70名が作品を展示します。
タイトルの「百花」は文化・芸術活動などが、自由に活発に行われることを意味する「百花斉放」という言葉からとりました。
副館長が願っていた美術の未来に向かう展覧会となれば、幸いです。

I have published the writings of director Sudoh for 10 times. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him.
A memorial exhibition for my late wife Noriko
January 27th of this year will already be the third anniversary of the death of my late wife Noriko.
On this occasion, Ms. Tamae Takahashi, who has supported the Gallery SUDOH as a staff member for a long time, became the initiator, and with the cooperation of other people involved, she is planning a memorial exhibition for Noriko. The exhibition will be held at Ochiai-kan, a Japanese inn on the shores of Lake Tanzawa in Yamakita-machi, Kanagawa Prefecture, and at Taiheiraku, a handmade soba noodle restaurant, thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Ishida, who run these two establishments.
Mr. and Mrs. Ishida both graduated from art universities and continue to work as painters while taking over the family business. Mr. Katsuya Ishida, the husband, applied for and won a prize in the “Messages from Young Painters” exhibition organized by the Gallery SUDOH, and later had a solo exhibition at the Gallery SUDOH. We have also been deeply involved in the “Artist in Residence” program in Odawara in 2013, where artists from Japan and abroad are selected and invited to participate.
When Ms. Takahashi asked all the artists who had helped her at the Gallery SUDOH to participate in the memorial exhibition, a total of 70 people agreed to participate. Some of them are from overseas.
I am happy to be alive and filled with emotion that so many people have not forgotten the hard work Noriko did to take care of them before she died.
The exhibition will be held from March 5 (Sat) to 20 (Sun) this year, a little later than the anniversary of her death due to the venue.
The DM with detailed information is ready and will be sent out soon. We hope that many people, including the artists who will participate, will come out to this beautiful and natural place. There will be an inns attached so you can stay overnight.
During the exhibition, I am also looking forward to inviting Noriko from the other world to visit with me, to show her the works on display, and to hear from the people present about their memories of Noriko and their recent activities.
In preparation for this,I am trying my best to stay fit and healthy so that I won’t be in mourning with her.
Ichiro Sudoh
Led by fate
There are encounters between people, bound together by mysterious fate. However, it is accompanied by a firm will and the power of one’s own action.
My connection to the Gallery SUDOH comes from the fact that Mrs. Taiko Horiguchi, my drawing teacher, and Mrs. Noriko Sudo, the deputy director, have been friends since they were university students. My encounter with Mrs. Horiguchi started when I was attending a gallery called Space U.
I was a high school student at the time, and I just loved drawing and looking at pictures, and I thought it would be nice to have some kind of job that involved art. However, I wasn’t a good painter, didn’t have the money to go to art school, and wasn’t really interested in going to college until I was 22. I wanted to work as soon as possible.
Space U was a gallery that happened to be built near my house during that time.
Many of the exhibits were quite avant-garde. But I was so curious about it that I couldn’t help myself. Every time I passed by, I would stop and take a peek inside. When I opened the door, the owner, Fumie Wada, welcomed me with a cup of delicious coffee. It was the only place where even someone like me, who was not familiar with contemporary art, could feel at ease and appreciate the works in a warm atmosphere.
We decided to have a drawing session there, and I was able to participate with them. The instructor at that time was Mrs. Horiguchi.
I am currently working on a memorial exhibition for the deputy curator.I’ve been away from making art for a while, so I’m feeling the joy of making art again. I am remembering her and being encouraged as I go along. I am looking forward to seeing the works of the participating artists. This excitement is the best part of doing something with the Deputy Curator!

「Hyakka for Noriko Sudoh」
March 5, (Sat) – March 20,(Sun)2022
Venue: Ochiaikan ,Tanzawako Memorial Museum (2F), Kominka [Miho no Ie]
Noriko Sudoh, Director of the Gallery SUDOH, passed away peacefully in January 2020. Seventy artists will exhibit their works in honor of her, who loved art and always pursued new possibilities.
The title of the exhibition, “Hyakka,” is taken from the phrase “Hyakka Seihou,” which means the free and vigorous performance of cultural and artistic activities.
We hope that this exhibition will lead to the future of art that Noriko had hoped for.
